The Benefits of Each Type of Massage

When most people think of any type of massage, they categorize it as a luxury rather than a need. However, you should consider all of the benefits of getting a massage before labeling it as a luxury because massage has a plethora of health benefits that come with the overall sense of well-being that the massage brings about. A reputable massage therapist has the ability to reduce your feelings of stress while also reducing pain, increasing your flexibility, and even improving your sleep habits (plus more)!

The Types of Massage Explained

Each type of massage is different; while all help to reduce stress levels, they also have varying other benefits as well. Below are the top six types of massage, and their benefits

Deep Tissue Massage

For those that experience chronic muscle pain or have incurred injuries related to sports, deep tissue massage is a popular choice. The massage therapist applies intense pressure with their fingers and utilizes slow strokes to get the proper application. Deep tissue massages usually focus on the entire body and last up to 90 minutes. Even though there is more pressure applied, the client should not feel any more discomfort or soreness than they would after a regular massage session.

Reflexology

For those that prefer not to have the “full” massage experience, reflexology is a good option. This type of massage focuses on pressure points in your hands, feet, ears, and other areas. These pressure points can minimize headaches, increase blood circulation, relax your nerves, and boost energy. Nerve endings in these areas are connected to all parts of the body, even the organs! Reflexology offers a well-targeted message.

Swedish Massage

For those looking for that overall sense of relaxation and wellbeing, this is the best option! Five different massage strokes are used in various orders in order to relieve discomfort in the muscles and back.

Cupping

Those looking for temporary relief of pain turn to cupping. The massage therapist looks over the body and places suction cups over the tight or sore areas. The cup is placed there until the blood rushes to the area. This relieves pain. There are three different types of cupping: Dry, Wet, and Fire. Bruising may occur where the cups are placed.

Myofascial

For those experiencing tightness, this type of massage focuses on the fibrous connective tissues right below the skin. The tissue is broken down and allows the client to feel more “loose”. In addition to their hands, a massage therapist may use a foam roller or other instrument to ensure the client receives the full effect.

Shiatsu

Those with sinus conditions, sleep disorders, or chronic pain tend to gravitate towards reflexology. Massage sessions usually involve the entire body, but special considerations are given to the fingers, thumbs, and hands in order to trigger the release of endorphins. This will result in less pain, lower blood pressure, and hormonal balance. Coordination and energy increase!

There are many other massage techniques that are available, and it is best to speak to a qualified massage therapist to see which type(s) of massage will work best in order to reach your goals.
